When the Band is traveling doing shows from town to town on the road (and we did a ton of it, this year)… Why is it that everyone always ends up in my room for the “After Gig Party”? Yeah, it’s me, Dave who gets the call from the front desk at 3 am cause the rest of the hotel can’t sleep! Cause we’re too loud! Really? Are you kidding me? We’re a band we’re supposed to be loud and live out the “trash the hotel” Van Halen mantra! Actually I don’t mind cause when it comes down to it, it is “Alan Turner and the Steel Horse Band” and if there comes a time that we get more then the “shut the hell up!” I can always fall back on… “It’s his band!” (pointing the finger at Alan).
The Christmas EP was a blast to do. We had a ton of fun and I would like to give credit to Alan on the idea. Good Call! It was so funny one night at the studio with Alan, Kevin (Metro 37 Recording Studios) and myself, doing some mixing. Kevin looked at me and said, “Dude, you got to stop being so anal!” I think Alan and I both busted a gut laughing. Truth is anyone who knows me often will call me by one of my two nicknames, Anal Dave or Anxiety Dave… Where’s my Xanax? Just kidding, but truthfully all professional drummers are anal to some extent, including myself. It comes with the job. If there was a “quarterback” in music and in a band, it’s got to be the drummer. Oh yeah, I’m impartial! You see when Alan is talking to the audience, keeping the crowd involved and having fun with the folks, when all eyes are on him, there is something else going on behind the scenes. (and let me add that Alan is great at just that! Getting and keeping the crowd involved!) It is my job to make sure the band is ready for the next song. 80% of the songs on our set start and end with the drummer. It’s a big responsibility! Dead air time is something bands try to avoid as much as possible and I only try to do my best! So the next time you come out to one of our shows or any other act for that matter, watch the drummer for a few times in between the songs. There’s a lot going on!
Thank you again for the overwhelming support, you all show this band! It is a great joy to perform in front of so many enthusiastic friends and fans! I truly hope all is well with you and yours! As for me I’m going to go do what I do on a daily basis (I’m anal remember?) Going to beat the crap out of my Yamaha drum kit! Actually pounding the drums daily helps me to cut back on the Xanax. Down to only one pill a day… I’m joking!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Love Ya!
